Golden Moments - “Fur Peace Ranch” - 10/11/14
It was a brisk day amidst the rolling hills of southern Ohio but the opportunity to witness Larry Campbell & Theresa Williams at “The Land Of Oz” was awaiting. There have been other duos during the Golden Age of music, i.e., Sonny & Cher, Ike & Tina, Buckingham & Nicks, Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes, Marilyn McCoe & Billy Davis Jr, & others but none have exuded the passion not only for the genre but each other more than these two. A potpourri of tunes evolves into a coterie of “Blues”, “Folk” and renditions of “gospel” as the charismatic tandem had the 220 fans mesmerized and anxious for the next chosen song of their repertoire.
There are a few noted musicians with the innate ability to play anything with strings & obviously Larry Campbell is one of those with that connotation. A three time Grammy winner, A Lifetime Achievement Award and a known affinity for his favorite mensch who also happened to be at home from his solo tour & those present were gifted with the inclusion of Jorma Kaukonen for a few songs.
These are events that ultimately lead to historic performances and this would not be an exception & certainly not a dusty diorama with fossils of The Woodstock Nation nor a momentary lapse of reason. Jorma & Larry could have flipped a coin to see who would be the chosen docent for those moments of musical mayhem but with a treasure trove of songs to choose from & augmented by the voice of Theresa Williams, “The Magic” of the moment will forever live in the memories of those who traverse the highways of surrounding states in hopes of becoming a witness to one of the many remembered exploits of Fur Peace Ranch.
Songs of the heart are those that transcend from decade to decade but when being played by those who exude a distinct reverence & comfort not only for the fans but for each other, it doesn’t get any better than that. Kudos to John Hurlbut, Jorma & Vanessa Kaukonen, Brett & the entire staff, your efforts never go unnoticed.
